The Life of A Tweet

Twitter these days is where you can find Celebrities, pseudo-celebrities, web masters, news correspondents, bloggers and business brands. The great thing about this is that because everyone is on Twitter, it makes it a lot easier to get your name out there and get people talking about your opinions and issues.

A Retweet is when someone on Twitter repost one of your tweets to their own followers.  This is great as it features your own Twitter account name in the retweet, meaning that your name gets out there in front of a whole new audience, and your tweet is living longer and spread your message. Tweets without retweets have their own hidden lifecycle. While that lifecycle probably correlates strongly, a retweet re-energizes and probably means that retweeted tweets have slightly longer lives

Every day on Twitter, more than 500 million tweets are sent. That translates to about 5,700 tweets every second, according to the social media site. That’s a lot of 140-character tweets floating around.

The Most Retweeted Tweets

Before he took the stage to affirm his election victory, President Obama marked his win via Twitter. Within hours, this Tweet simultaneously became the most retweeted of 2012 until Ellen Degeneres’s selfie knocked Barack Obama’s ‘Four More Years’ tweet as the most popular tweet of all time Sunday night during the Oscars.

The comedian, armed with her Samsung phone, gathered a few of her closest friends (read: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, JLaw) and snapped a pic. The retweets quickly added up. Within 30 minutes, it was nearing Barack Obama’s record of 778,800.

Then, a few minutes later, it happened. Within the hour, the tweet would go on to surpass one million retweets, making it far and beyond the most-retweeted tweet of all time.
